When something becomes part of your own wellness routine, it is natural to wonder whether your dog or cat could benefit too. We hear the question regularly from Zenii customers: "Can I give my pet hydrogen water?" Online, you will find confident claims that it helps ageing dogs, anxious cats or pets recovering from illness.
The honest answer is more careful than that. This article sets out what is actually known about hydrogen water and companion animals, what is not known, and the sensible precautions to take if you are considering it. Our position is simple: your vet should be part of that decision.
Is hydrogen water safe for dogs and cats?
Plain hydrogen water, made from clean drinking water with nothing else added, is chemically just water with dissolved hydrogen gas, and is not generally expected to pose more risk than ordinary water. However, there is very little research involving pets specifically, so safety for individual animals, especially those with health conditions, has not been established.
Hydrogen gas is colourless, odourless and tasteless, and it leaves the water fairly quickly. In that sense, a bowl of hydrogen water left out for a few hours becomes much like a bowl of ordinary water.
What does the research actually say?
Most animal research on molecular hydrogen has been done in laboratory rodents as models for human disease, not in pet dogs and cats. Those studies were designed to explore biological mechanisms in humans, so their results cannot simply be applied to a family pet.
Studies specifically designed to test hydrogen water as a supplement for companion animals are limited and small. That means:
-
There is no established benefit for pets.
-
There is no agreed "dose" or amount for dogs or cats of different sizes.
-
Long-term effects in pets have not been studied in any meaningful way.
Even in humans, where far more research exists, the evidence is still developing. We explain that picture in hydrogen water benefits: what research suggests and what it does not. For pets, the evidence base is thinner still.
Be cautious about bold claims online
Be sceptical of any product or post claiming hydrogen water treats, cures or prevents disease in pets. Claims like these are not supported by current evidence, and relying on them could delay proper veterinary care.
If your pet is unwell, lethargic, drinking far more or less than usual, or showing changes in appetite or behaviour, see a vet. Changes in thirst in particular can be an early sign of conditions such as kidney disease or diabetes in dogs and cats, and they need a professional diagnosis. Our balanced guide to hydrogen water myths covers similar overclaiming in the human market.

Why you shouldn't use hydrogen tablets in your pet's water
Do not add human hydrogen tablets to your pet's water bowl unless your vet specifically approves it. Hydrogen tablets work through a chemical reaction, typically involving magnesium and food acids, and leave dissolved minerals and residues in the water.
Those ingredients are formulated and dosed for adult humans. A small dog or a cat is a fraction of that body weight, and some pets, particularly those with kidney problems, may need their mineral intake carefully managed. What is a modest amount for you may not be appropriate for them.
If you are curious about hydrogen water for your pet, water made by an electrolysis device that adds only hydrogen to clean water is the closer option to "plain water", but even then, discuss it with your vet first.
Sensible precautions if your vet agrees
-
Start with clean, safe drinking water. Use the same quality of water you would normally give your pet.
-
Keep it plain. No flavourings, sweeteners, electrolytes or supplements designed for people.
-
Never replace their normal water supply. Fresh water should always be freely available.
-
Introduce it gradually and watch for any change in drinking, appetite, stools or behaviour.
-
Stop and contact your vet if you notice anything unusual.
-
Don't use it instead of treatment. It should never replace prescribed medication or veterinary care.
What matters most for your pet's hydration?
For dogs and cats, the basics matter far more than any specialised water: constant access to fresh, clean water, especially in South Africa's hot months.
-
Refresh bowls at least daily and clean them regularly.
-
Place extra bowls in shaded spots during summer and on hot Highveld or Karoo afternoons.
-
Carry water for your dog on walks and hikes, and avoid exercising them in the midday heat.
-
For cats, which often drink little, a water fountain or wet food can help increase fluid intake. Ask your vet what suits your cat.
FAQ
Can dogs drink hydrogen water?
Plain hydrogen water is not generally expected to be more harmful than ordinary water, but research in dogs is very limited. Ask your vet before introducing it.
Can cats drink hydrogen water?
The same applies to cats. There is little cat-specific evidence, so speak to your vet, particularly if your cat has kidney or urinary issues.
Does hydrogen water have proven health benefits for pets?
No. There are no established health benefits for pets. Most research has been in laboratory animals as models for human health.
Can I put hydrogen tablets in my dog's water bowl?
Not without your vet's approval. Tablets leave minerals and residues that are dosed for adult humans, not animals.
Should hydrogen water replace my pet's normal water?
No. Fresh, clean water should always be available, and hydrogen water should never replace veterinary care.
